<hi style=afpcap>The introduction of gun turrets on a large scale fitted to combat aircraft caused the Army to issue a requirement for an aircraft type tailored to train aerial gunners. Amongst those who responded was Fairchild with their XAT-13 which was designed as a bomber crew trainer with provision to train all members of a medium bomber crew. In 1942 the same basic aircraft type was ordered into production as a gunnery trainer with a two gun dorasl turret and a single nose gun designated the AT-21. The type served at several of the specialised gunnery schools until replaced by training versions of the operational aircraft, enabling the AT-21s to be relegated to target tug duties.</hi>
